Patna, May 3: In a landmark development for Bihar’s healthcare sector, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday inaugurated a new 1,050-bed block at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), marking a significant milestone in the state’s ambitious plan to transform PMCH into the world’s second-largest hospital.
The newly launched wing, part of a sprawling high-rise structure, features 65 intensive care units (ICUs), 100 private rooms, 10 deluxe rooms, and two suites, dramatically expanding access to advanced medical care for patients across Bihar and neighboring regions. The facility also includes modular operation theatres, high-tech diagnostic labs, and a rooftop helipad to facilitate emergency air ambulance services, particularly for patients from remote areas.
Chief Minister Kumar, accompanied by deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, health minister Mangal Pandey, and senior health officials, also inaugurated new outpatient (OPD) and emergency services in the maternity, ophthalmology, and ENT departments. “This is not just a building-it is a commitment to the people of Bihar,” Kumar emphasized, highlighting the government’s dedication to upgrading healthcare services and infrastructure statewide.
Deputy CM Choudhary called the expansion the largest in PMCH’s history, while officials stressed that the project is about more than just infrastructure. The vision is to create an AI-enabled, smart medical hub, with upcoming super-specialty services in cardiology, oncology, neurology, trauma care, and more. State-of-the-art laboratories and multi-specialty operating theatres are also in the pipeline.
The Rs 5,540 crore mega project, first approved in 2018, aims to expand PMCH’s total capacity to 5,462 beds by 2027, making it the largest hospital in India and the second largest globally. The redevelopment will also add a new medical college with 250 MBBS seats, 200 postgraduate seats, residential facilities for faculty, and an auditorium, positioning PMCH as a national and international medical landmark.
The Chief Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare reaches every corner of the state, with new medical colleges and hospitals being established across Bihar.
“Ensure the project is completed on time. Once finished, the new PMCH will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that will provide comprehensive healthcare, eliminating the need for patients to seek treatment in other states,” said Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
