New Delhi, February 23, 2025 — In a bold move to revolutionize India’s premier medical institution, the NITI Aayog has initiated a comprehensive transformation plan for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. A dedicated committee, led by NITI Aayog member Dr. V K Paul, has been formed to evaluate AIIMS’ current operational framework and recommend strategic reforms, ensuring its emergence as a global leader in medical research and patient care.
According to the Aayog’s 2024-25 report, the committee’s objectives include optimizing patient inflow, establishing key performance indicators, enhancing governance structures, and ensuring the financial sustainability of the institution. The recommendations will be accompanied by specific implementation timelines to ensure measurable progress.
Beyond AIIMS, the NITI Aayog is collaborating with the CSEP Research Foundation to study global health strategies. This collaboration aims to extract valuable insights that will aid in expanding Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across India, making healthcare more accessible and efficient for the population.
Another significant aspect of the Aayog’s healthcare strategy is addressing the treatment of rare diseases. By focusing on the accessibility and affordability of essential medications, the initiative has already led to the production of several indigenous drugs. These domestically manufactured treatments are being offered at significantly reduced prices compared to their imported counterparts, with additional medicines expected to be introduced by the end of the year.
This ambitious initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure, improving medical research capabilities, and ensuring quality healthcare is accessible to all citizens.
