Bedford Hospital in the Highlands has been forced to close its wards to new patients and restrict visitor access due to a significant norovirus outbreak. The move comes just weeks after health officials warned of a potential second wave of the highly contagious virus, driven by shifts in the dominant circulating strains.

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), immunity to one strain of norovirus does not guarantee protection against others. Recent data has revealed a surge in cases of the GII.17 genotype, though the prevalence of the GII.4 strain is also rapidly increasing. While GII.17 still accounts for the majority of cases, its dominance has decreased from 76% in November to 59%, while GII.4 now represents 29% of cases-up from 10% three months ago.

Amy Douglas, lead epidemiologist at the UKHSA, cautioned that with multiple genotypes circulating, people could be infected more than once in a single season. She highlighted the significant impact on health and social care settings, including hospitals and care homes, and emphasized that symptoms can be more severe for older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of norovirus include sudden nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes fever, headache, and body aches. The UKHSA and NHS England both stress the importance of thorough handwashing with soap and water, as alcohol gels are ineffective against norovirus. Individuals are advised to stay home for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop to prevent further spread.

Hospital norovirus cases remain close to record highs, with an average of 1,134 patients per day-more than double last year’s figures. NHS England data also show a 22% increase in ambulance handover delays, further straining emergency services.

Professor Sir Stephen Powis, national medical director of NHS England, urged the public to continue practicing good hygiene and to use NHS services responsibly, reserving emergency services for life-threatening situations.
