Sagar, MP – In a dramatic turn of events, a newborn abducted from the maternity ward of Bundelkhand Medical College (BMC) in Sagar was safely recovered within hours on Thursday, following swift police action and hospital staff vigilance.
The incident occurred around 9AM on Thursday when a woman, described as wearing a red saree, was captured on CCTV calmly leaving the maternity ward while carrying the newborn. The child’s mother, who had delivered on August 10, was unaware of the abduction until she noticed her baby was missing, prompting an immediate family and hospital alert.
Hospital authorities rapidly reviewed CCTV footage, which helped identify the suspect as she exited the premises. Subsequently, a district-wide alert was issued, and law enforcement agencies began to check major public transport points, including bus stands and railway stations.
Acting on intelligence inputs, police learned that the suspect had boarded a bus heading toward Banda. Multiple teams from Sagar, Banda, and Karrapur were dispatched. In a coordinated operation, the bus was intercepted near Karrapur, leading to the safe recovery of the newborn from two women passengers, one reportedly aged around 70. Both women are residents of Shahgarh.
The infant was promptly taken back to BMC and admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) for observation. Medical staff have since confirmed that the child is healthy and was joyfully reunited with the mother.
Speaking to the media, BMC Dean Dr. PS Thakur confirmed that a three-member inquiry committee has been established to investigate the incident. The security guard on duty during the abduction was suspended for 15 days pending the inquiry. Police are currently interrogating the suspects and probing possible connections to previous child abduction cases in the area.
The rapid response by hospital staff and police has been widely praised and has brought considerable relief to the affected family and the local community.
