A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers from the University of Tokyo and Hiroshima University has unveiled a fascinating discovery: music is intricately linked to unique physical sensations experienced within the human body. The study, published in the journal iScience, sheds light on how music can evoke profound bodily responses, offering insights into its potential therapeutic applications.
In this pioneering research, over 500 participants were exposed to eight brief melodies, each consisting of four chords with varying levels of predictability. As participants listened to these melodies, they reported experiencing specific physical sensations, particularly in the heart and abdomen, in response to the musical sequences.
Lead author Associate Professor Tatsuya Daikoku from the University of Tokyo explained, “Our research shows that some chord sequences create similar bodily sensations in certain organs, particularly in the brain, heart, and abdomen. This indicates that our interoceptive sense, that is the sensations felt from within the body, may to some degree underlie musical aesthetic appreciation and positive emotion.”
The study delved into how different chord progressions elicited distinct physical responses and emotional reactions. One chord sequence, labeled the sLuL-sLuL sequence, evoked pronounced sensations in the abdomen and instilled feelings of calm, satisfaction, nostalgia, and empathy. Conversely, another sequence, the sLuL-sHuL progression, stirred stronger heart sensations and was associated with heightened pleasure.
Interestingly, the study found that music sequences affecting the head were linked with feelings of anxiety and confusion. This underscores the intricate interplay between music, bodily sensations, and emotional states.
“Our research offers insights into how musical experiences are intricately connected to our bodies,” remarked Daikoku. “It holds promise for contributing to the use of music in stress relief and enhancing mental health.”
