A recent clinical study comparing three popular dietary strategies has identified intermittent fasting—specifically, fasting two days a week—as the most effective approach for people with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control, achieve weight loss, and maintain adherence to a healthy lifestyle. The research, reported on July 16, 2025, involved head-to-head trials of intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, and continuous calorie restriction, uncovering clear benefits for the intermittent fasting group.

Participants who followed this intermittent fasting routine experienced notable improvements in blood glucose levels—a key factor in diabetes management. Moreover, this group saw greater weight loss and were more likely to stick to their prescribed dietary plan over time, as compared to those who tried daily calorie-cutting or time-limited eating windows.

These findings add to a growing body of evidence emphasizing the role of diet in managing, and in some cases even reversing, type 2 diabetes. Prior studies have highlighted the benefits of low-carbohydrate and Mediterranean-style diets, as well as general lifestyle changes such as increased dietary fiber, healthier fat intake, and regular physical activity. However, this new research underscores that intermittent fasting may offer superior results both for metabolic health and for sustainable habit formation among people living with diabetes.

“Fasting just two days a week helped people with diabetes improve blood sugar, lose weight, and stick to the plan better than other diets,” the study noted.
