Stockholm, June 6, 2024 – In a collaborative effort between Karolinska Institutet, Sophiahemmet University, and LongLife Active AB, researchers have unveiled a groundbreaking mobile health app designed to foster healthy lifestyle behaviors. This AI-assisted application has shown significant potential in enhancing physical activity, improving dietary habits, and promoting mental well-being among users.

According to findings published in Digit Health, the app was developed with extensive user input and features personalized AI functions tailored to individual users. Dr. Callum Regan, a PhD student at Karolinska Institutet, highlighted the app’s unique approach: “Users appreciated the holistic health message of ‘feeling good at your own level’ and reported a ‘kickstart’ in their behavior change efforts.”

The study, which evaluated the app’s feasibility through a mixed-method approach, included feedback from 55 participants over a 12-week period. Results indicated strong user acceptance, engagement, and usability, crucial factors in developing effective health-promoting technologies.

Dr. Regan emphasized the importance of user-centered design in health app development: “Incorporating user perspectives is essential for creating solutions that resonate with individuals’ needs and preferences. This approach not only motivates behavior change but also aligns with global health goals, particularly SDG3, focusing on good health and well-being.”

Looking ahead, researchers plan to conduct a large-scale trial to further validate the app’s effectiveness across diverse populations. Additionally, efforts are underway to engage residents from low socioeconomic backgrounds in Stockholm, aiming to reduce health disparities through accessible digital health solutions.

The publication marks a significant step towards leveraging technology to empower individuals in achieving healthier lifestyles, paving the way for future innovations in public health interventions.
