NEW DELHI, April 15, 2025 – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has unveiled an ambitious strategy aimed at establishing the national capital as a leading global destination for health tourism. The announcement came during her address at the 70th Foundation Day ceremony of the prestigious Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
While celebrating the hospital’s decades of service and excellence, CM Gupta outlined her administration’s vision for a revitalized healthcare sector in Delhi. She contrasted her government’s approach with that of the previous administration, criticizing its perceived lack of prioritization for healthcare.
Highlighting the harsh lessons learned during the recent pandemic, Gupta noted the tragic loss of life due to delayed medical treatment and shortcomings in the government’s response. She commended the doctors and staff at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for providing crucial care and hope during those challenging times.
Looking forward, the Chief Minister emphasized her government’s commitment to ensuring that all Delhi residents have access to timely, high-quality health services. A significant financial commitment backs this vision, with the current health budget standing at Rs 12,893 crore. Within this budget, Rs 2,144 crore is specifically earmarked for bolstering the Ayushman Bharat Yojana initiative.
The core of the plan involves a massive infrastructure expansion. The government intends to construct 24 new hospitals, adding a substantial 16,000 beds to the city’s healthcare capacity. Additionally, 400 health and wellness centers are planned to improve primary care access across the city.
Officials state that these comprehensive measures aim not only to elevate the standard of care for Delhi’s citizens but also to attract international patients, positioning Delhi as a premier medical treatment hub. This focus on health tourism is also expected to provide a significant boost to the city’s economy.
