Pune, June 19, 2025 — The Indian Council of Medical Research–National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV) has confirmed that infections caused by new strains of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in India are not resulting in severe illness. Ongoing surveillance and whole genome sequencing of RT-PCR positive samples from across the country are being conducted to closely monitor the evolution of the virus.
Dr. Kumar, a senior official at ICMR-NIV Pune, emphasized that while new sublineages of the Omicron variant have been identified, there have been no reports of severe COVID-19 infections linked to these strains. He highlighted that the institute’s primary responsibility is to monitor and report on circulating virus strains, ensuring timely updates for public health authorities and the general public.
Recent genome sequencing efforts have revealed that Omicron sub-variants such as LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1 are among those being tracked, with the first three being more prevalent in certain regions. Despite an uptick in cases observed in the south, west, and now northern parts of India, the severity of infections remains generally mild, and there is no cause for alarm at present.
ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Behl reiterated that while new variants can sometimes evade immunity—whether from prior infection or vaccination—there is currently no indication that these emerging strains are causing severe disease, especially in individuals without comorbidities. The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the nationwide respiratory virus sentinel surveillance network continue to keep a close watch on emerging infections and pathogens.
Health officials have advised the public to remain vigilant and continue following standard precautions such as hand hygiene, wearing masks in crowded places, and staying home if symptomatic. No immediate action or additional vaccination is recommended at this time, as the situation is being closely monitored and India retains the capacity to rapidly produce vaccines if required.
