Khammam, Telangana: In a deeply troubling incident that highlights severe lapses in medical care and administrative oversight, a six-year-old girl from Kothagudem in Khammam district has been left paralyzed after a sequence of rat bites and alleged anti-rabies vaccine overdoses.
The victim, identified as Samudra Laxmi Bhavani Keerthi, was bitten by rats on multiple occasions while sleeping at home. Seeking medical attention, her family approached a local government hospital, but the treatment that followed has now raised serious concerns.
Between March and November, Keerthi reportedly received 15 anti-rabies injections, far exceeding standard protocols. According to her mother, Samudra Bindu, “The doctors administered an overdose of the vaccine. Initially, she complained of pain in her hand every time the injection was given, but the situation worsened over time.”
Shockingly, Keerthi revealed that her teachers had intervened after her injuries, arranging funds and taking her to the hospital for repeated vaccinations without her mother’s knowledge. Other students with minor rat bites were reportedly given only a single dose of the vaccine.
A private hospital doctor who assessed the case suspects the overdose to be the cause of Keerthi’s paralysis. “We are waiting for detailed medical reports, but an overdose appears to be the reason,” the doctor stated.
Investigations Underway
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with demands for accountability and improvements in public healthcare. District Medical Officer Dr. Narayana has initiated an inquiry to determine how such a significant dosage of the vaccine was administered and whether proper guidelines were followed.
“We are investigating the circumstances under which the dosage was given and will take appropriate action against those responsible,” the officer confirmed.
District Collector Muzamil Khan has also taken note of the issue, ordering a thorough investigation. Following his directive, child welfare officials visited Keerthi’s school and submitted a report on the matter.
Public Outrage and Calls for Justice
The community has reacted with anger, demanding better healthcare facilities and stricter monitoring in government hospitals to prevent such tragedies. Keerthi’s mother, Bindu, is urging authorities to hold those responsible accountable and to provide the best possible treatment for her daughter.
“This should not happen to any other child. We trusted the system, and now my daughter cannot move. We want justice,” Bindu said.
The case serves as a grim reminder of the need for stringent medical oversight, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where negligence can have life-altering consequences. The outcome of the ongoing investigation is eagerly awaited as both the family and the public seek answers and corrective measures.
