Patna, April 26, 2025 – Sanjeev Mukhiya, the alleged mastermind behind the controversial NEET-UG 2024 question paper leak and numerous other exam scams spanning years, was arrested by the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police in the early hours of Friday, April 25. Mukhiya, who had been absconding for nearly a year and carried a Rs 3 lakh reward for his capture, was apprehended during a late-night raid on an apartment in Danapur, Patna.

The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into widespread irregularities in competitive examinations. EOU Additional Director General Nayyar Hasnain Khan confirmed that the operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs gathered by the EOU’s Special Operations Group (SOG). The SOG tipped off authorities about Mukhiya’s location, leading to a coordinated raid with the Danapur Police Station.

Sanjeev Mukhiya, also known as Sanjeev Kumar, is a resident of Nagarnausa village in Bihar’s Nalanda district. His alleged involvement in leaking question papers dates back over two decades, according to police sources. He started his career as a fourth-grade government employee before rising to become a local Panchayat head. His family has also faced scrutiny, with his son, Shiv Kumar, a doctor, currently incarcerated in connection with a separate paper leak case. Mukhiya’s wife, Mamta Devi, unsuccessfully contested the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections from Harnaut on a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) ticket.

Mukhiya is currently wanted in several cases registered at the Economic Offences Police Station, including Case Nos. 27/2024 (related to NEET-UG), 16/2023, and 06/2024. He had previously been charge-sheeted in Case Nos. 12/12 and 30/13.

Regarding the NEET-UG 2024 leak, reports indicate Mukhiya allegedly received the question papers and answer keys on his phone from an unidentified professor even before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officially took over the investigation. The CBI, which filed its fifth chargesheet in the national NEET-UG probe on November 22, 2024, has arrested 45 individuals so far. A civil court had issued an arrest warrant against Mukhiya on January 27, 2025.

Mukhiya is currently being held in EOU custody and undergoing interrogation. Authorities stated they plan to seek five days of custody from the court before handing him over to the CBI for further investigation into the nationwide ramifications of the paper leak. ADG Khan also mentioned that a recommendation would be made to reward the police officers involved in the successful raid.
