New Delhi – The ongoing delays in the NEET PG 2024 admission process have sparked widespread frustration among medical aspirants and institutions alike. The National Medical Commission (NMC) Chairperson, Dr. BN Gangadhar, has attributed the prolonged disruptions to a surge in applicant numbers and a series of legal disputes.
Speaking to Education Times, Dr. Gangadhar explained, “The number of aspirants for PG courses has increased over the past decade. New seats are being added because more candidates are applying. At some point, we will have the same number of PG seats and an equal number of students passing out.” He further highlighted that students reapplying after withdrawing from previous admissions and seeking legal recourse contribute significantly to the backlog, impacting subsequent counselling rounds.
The Supreme Court and various High Courts are currently addressing numerous petitions related to seat reservations, exam transparency, and allegations of seat blocking. These legal challenges have exacerbated the delays, placing additional strain on existing resident doctors. “The delayed arrival of new medical graduates could increase the workload for existing residents, resulting in longer hours and greater stress,” stated B. Unnikrishnan, Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
Adding to the controversy, the NMC’s decision to conduct NEET PG 2025 in two shifts using a normalization process has drawn criticism. Organizations like the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) have called for greater transparency.
However, Dr. Gangadhar defended the decision, stating, “Many other exams have been using normalization to arrive at all-India ranks. It is a time-tested method as it is easier to manage two batches.” Despite these assurances, aspirants remain skeptical, with FAIMA demanding the release of answer keys and raw scores before results are declared.
The ongoing legal battles and the increasing number of applicants continue to create uncertainty, leaving medical aspirants in a state of limbo and impacting the healthcare system’s workforce.
