Speculations and contradictions abound as the anticipated NEET PG (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Post Graduation) for 2024 appears to be drifting away from its previously scheduled date. According to sources, the exam is expected to be conducted in the first week of July this year, diverging from its initially proposed March date.

This revelation, disseminated by sources to PTI (Press Trust of India) on Saturday, has startled many aspiring medical professionals, particularly after the National Board of Examinations (NBE) had initially set the tentative date for NEET PG 2024 as March 3rd, 2024.

The uncertainty triggered by this shift in the exam timeline has prompted anxious queries on social media platforms from candidates seeking clarity and confirmation.

In response to the growing concern, Dr. Yogender Malilk, a member of the National Medical Commission’s Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB), urged aspirants to exercise patience and await an official notification. Taking to a social media platform, Dr. Malik advised individuals to refrain from drawing conclusions until an official announcement is made.

This alteration in the NEET PG 2024 schedule raises questions about the previously anticipated implementation of the National Exit Test (NExT), which was slated to replace the NEET-PG examination this year. The NExT was deferred by the Apex Medical Commission without a scheduled date for future execution.

The confusion deepened when the National Medical Commission (NMC) released the draft Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023, suggesting the conduct of either NExT or NEET-PG for admission to PG courses, depending on the regulations in place.

Despite the earlier announcement by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) aligning with the March 2024 NEET PG date, PTI’s sources now indicate a potential shift of the exam to July. ANI’s sources attribute this postponement to COVID-19 disruptions, anticipating students’ completion of internships by June-July 2024.

Amidst this uncertainty, the recently-notified “Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023” signal the continuation of NEET-PG until the proposed NExT framework becomes operational for PG admissions.

NEET-PG, currently the gateway examination for MD/MS and PG Diploma Courses under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, remains a vital step in medical education admissions, even as its timeline seems poised for an unforeseen shift in 2024.
