A 20-year-old student preparing for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET-UG) died by suicide in Sikar, Rajasthan, only three days after enrolling in a coaching institute, officials confirmed on Sunday. The incident took place in the Surya Nagar area, where the student was found hanging in his room at a private hostel late Saturday night.

According to police, the student was a native of Balotra in Rajasthan and had joined the coaching class just three days ago, reportedly attending only a single class before the incident. Sub-Inspector Rohitansh Kumar of Udhyog Nagar police station stated, “He had been staying in a hostel in the district’s Udhyog Nagar area. On Saturday, he died by suicide in his room. Prima facie, he went to the coaching centre only on Friday. No suicide note was recovered. The body was sent for an autopsy. His family was also informed. Further probe is underway”.

The hostel staff broke open the door after the student failed to respond to his friends’ persistent knocking late at night. The police subsequently began an investigation, noting that no suicide note was found at the scene.

This death brings the total number of alleged student suicides related to coaching stress in Rajasthan to 18 so far this year—16 in Kota, and one each in Sikar and Jodhpur. In response to the growing number of such incidents, the Rajasthan government had issued guidelines in 2023 requiring the installation of anti-hanging or spring-loaded fans in hostel rooms to help prevent suicides. The police are now examining why such a device was not installed in the deceased student’s room in accordance with these guidelines.
