New Delhi, Feb 26: The burgeoning Nutraceuticals market in India requires stringent regulations and robust quality control measures to ensure efficiency and safety, a senior official from the Ministry of Ayush stated on Tuesday.
Dr. Srinivas Rao Chinta, Joint Advisor at the Ministry of Ayush, emphasized the need for strengthening regulatory frameworks to enhance product safety and effectiveness. He highlighted that licensing remains a critical aspect of this emerging sector and should not be overlooked. Speaking at Assocham’s ‘10th Nutraceutical Summit’ in the national capital, Dr. Chinta pointed out the growing consumer dependence on Nutraceuticals for health and wellness, necessitating stringent oversight.
Nutraceuticals are specialized formulations of nutrients that aid in disease prevention and treatment, in addition to supplementing daily diets. Dr. Chinta underscored the essential role of regulatory bodies in ensuring the quality and authenticity of these products for everyday use.
He further advocated for a holistic approach, integrating Ayurvedic principles into modern Nutraceutical formulations, noting that consumers are increasingly seeking traditional health solutions. This integration has been a significant focus in recent policy advancements.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, has introduced the ‘Ayush Aahar’ category, aimed at regulating Ayurvedic nutritional supplements. This initiative ensures that products adhere to traditional Ayurvedic recipes and processes, thereby promoting their authenticity while facilitating production and marketing.
Sandeep Verma, Co-Chairperson of the Assocham National Wellness Council, acknowledged the growing consumer interest in health and wellness. He noted that advancements in personalized nutrition and AI-driven supplement recommendations are shaping the future of the industry, making it a promising sector for growth.
With India’s rich heritage in traditional knowledge, particularly in Ayurveda, the Nutraceutical industry is poised to expand globally. The country’s expertise in pharmaceutical formulations and high-quality standards further strengthens its position in the global market. Additionally, India’s thriving startup ecosystem has played a pivotal role in driving innovation and growth in the sector.
