In a groundbreaking decision aimed at enhancing patient authentication and clinical material management in the healthcare sector, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated all medical colleges to ensure ABHA ID registration for patients visiting for medical services.

The announcement, made during the 14th meeting of the NMC on 01-05-2024, signifies a significant shift in the way patient registration and authentication will be conducted in hospitals attached to medical colleges. According to the circular issued by the NMC, all patients seeking outpatient (OPD), inpatient (IPD), or emergency services must have their registration done with the ABHA ID in addition to the hospital’s registration number.

Dr. B Srinivas, the Secretary of the NMC, emphasized the importance of ABHA ID authentication in decision-making processes related to medical colleges, such as increasing seats in undergraduate or postgraduate programs, establishing new colleges, and renewing permissions for student admissions. The creation of ABHA ID is described as a simple process that can be conveniently facilitated with the possession of an Aadhaar Card, which has already been widely distributed among the population.

While the NMC stresses the necessity of ABHA ID authentication for future assessments starting from the academic year 2025-26, it also ensures that no patient should be denied treatment solely based on the absence of ABHA ID.

This new directive is expected to streamline patient registration processes, enhance the authenticity of clinical data, and contribute to improved decision-making in the medical education sector. Medical colleges and institutions are urged to comply with the ABHA ID registration requirement to align with the NMC’s vision for a more efficient and transparent healthcare system.

The implementation of ABHA ID registration marks a significant step towards modernizing healthcare practices and ensuring the highest standards of patient care and data management in medical colleges across the country.

For further information and updates, medical colleges and institutions are advised to refer to Circular No. N-16021/25/2023-IT-NMC dated 23-11-2024.

Stay tuned for more developments on this transformative initiative by the National Medical Commission.
