Mumbai, India – The city of Mumbai is witnessing a sharp 40% rise in flu and respiratory illness cases following the heaviest May rainfall in four years, according to municipal health officials. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an advisory urging residents to adopt precautionary measures as hospitals report a significant uptick in patients with seasonal ailments.

Weather Shift Drives Spike in Illness

The Santacruz observatory recorded 34 mm of rain between Tuesday and Thursday, nearly quadrupling the city’s average rainfall for May. This sudden transition from dry heat to high humidity has created ideal conditions for the spread of bacterial and viral infections, say physicians.

Municipal hospitals including KEM, Nair, and Sion have reported a 30-40% increase in outpatient visits. Most patients are presenting with symptoms such as fatigue, sore throats, persistent coughs, and general malaise.

“Humidity interferes with the body’s ability to regulate temperature, making it harder to fight off infections,” explained a senior doctor at a city hospital. “We are seeing a clear spike in cases, especially among vulnerable groups.”

Who Is Most at Risk?

Health experts warn that senior citizens and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are especially vulnerable to complications from seasonal flu and respiratory illnesses. The BMC has advised these groups to be particularly cautious and to seek medical attention promptly if symptoms persist.

BMC’s Advisory and Preventive Measures

The BMC’s advisory recommends the following steps for Mumbai residents:

  • Maintain personal hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water.

  • Wear masks: Especially in crowded or enclosed spaces.

  • Avoid self-medication: Seek professional medical advice if symptoms last more than three days.

  • Get vaccinated: The most effective way to protect against the flu, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

  • Monitor symptoms: Watch for high fever, difficulty breathing, severe pain, or confusion.

Recognizing Flu Symptoms

Typical flu symptoms include:

  • Fever and chills

  • Persistent cough

  • Body aches (notably in the back, legs, and head)

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Sore throat

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Headaches

  • Loss of appetite

Children may also experience vomiting and diarrhea. Residents are urged to seek immediate medical help if they develop severe symptoms or underlying health conditions worsen.

Looking Ahead

With more unseasonal rainfall predicted, healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and caution against self-treatment. The BMC continues to monitor the situation and will update the public as necessary.
