Mumbai, February 8, 2025 — A 64-year-old woman from Andheri West has been admitted to Seven Hills Hospital with suspected symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder. The patient was brought to the civic-run hospital on February 5 after experiencing fever, diarrhoea, and mobility issues, followed by the onset of paralysis.

Initial medical tests indicated the presence of white spots in the patient’s brain, a finding that led doctors to promptly move her to the intensive care unit (ICU) for further treatment. The woman is currently undergoing plasma exchange therapy, which is considered a vital treatment approach for patients with GBS.

While there has been speculation about this being the first potential case of GBS in Mumbai, civic health authorities have clarified that the city has reported sporadic cases in the past. “This is not linked to the outbreak in Pune, and the patient has no travel history to any affected regions,” said Dr. Daksha Shah, Executive Health Officer of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

In recent weeks, Maharashtra has seen cases of GBS emerge in districts such as Pune, though officials emphasize that there is no confirmed connection between the incidents in different areas.

GBS is a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, and in severe cases, paralysis. The cause is often unclear but may be triggered by infections. Early medical intervention is crucial to manage the symptoms and improve patient outcomes.

Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and doctors urge the public not to panic, stressing that GBS remains a rare condition.
