Mumbai, June 7, 2025:
In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about passenger safety on Indian Railways, a doctor couple from Mumbai was brutally attacked during a robbery attempt on a moving train early Wednesday morning. The husband, Dr. Yogesh Deshmukh, 50, an Ayurvedic practitioner, suffered the traumatic loss of part of his left arm while trying to save his wife from the assailant.

The Incident

Dr. Yogesh Deshmukh and his wife, Dr. Deepali Deshmukh, 44, both practicing physicians, were traveling with their nine-year-old daughter to visit a relative. The family boarded coach S-4 of an overnight train departing Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) at approximately 3:35 a.m. The attack occurred just 15 minutes later, between Kanjurmarg and Bhandup stations.

According to reports, a tall, unidentified man—estimated to be around six feet—approached Dr. Deepali’s berth and attempted to snatch her bag. Despite being half-asleep, Dr. Deepali resisted, leading the assailant to drag her toward the coach door. Dr. Yogesh, awakened by the commotion, leapt to his wife’s aid. In the ensuing struggle, as the train slowed, the robber jumped off with the stolen bag, causing both Dr. Yogesh and Dr. Deepali to fall onto the tracks.

Aftermath and Rescue

Tragically, Dr. Yogesh’s left arm was crushed under the wheels of the train. Dr. Deepali, though bruised, managed to pull her husband away from further danger. Disoriented and injured, the couple made their way to a nearby road, where they were spotted by Anil Jagdale, a milk delivery driver. Jagdale quickly transported them to a private hospital, where Dr. Yogesh was admitted to the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) and is currently recovering.

Their daughter, who remained on the train during the incident, was safely deboarded at Kalyan station after authorities were alerted.

Investigation Underway

The Government Railway Police (GRP) have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched a full investigation. CCTV footage from LTT and other stations along the route is being scrutinized to identify and apprehend the culprit. According to police, the stolen handbag contained less than Rs 5,000 in cash.

Public Reaction

The incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for enhanced security measures on trains, especially during nighttime journeys. The medical community and public alike have expressed solidarity with the Deshmukh family and demanded swift justice.
