In a landmark decision, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has granted the go-ahead for a re-examination of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2025 for candidates who faced significant disruptions due to power outages at exam centres in Indore and Ujjain. The court’s ruling comes after a series of petitions from affected students, who argued that the blackouts placed them at an unfair disadvantage during the high-stakes medical entrance exam.

Justice Subodh Abhyankar, presiding over the case, concluded that intervention was warranted under Article 14 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees the right to equality. The court noted that the power disruptions were beyond the control of the students and highlighted that the impact of the outages was uneven—some candidates benefited from natural light, while others struggled in near-darkness. To underscore the severity of the situation, the court even turned off the lights in its own courtroom during proceedings, demonstrating the challenges faced by examinees.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the NEET-UG, has now been directed to conduct a fresh exam for the petitioners. Importantly, the ranks of these candidates will be determined solely based on their performance in the re-test, and their counselling and seat allocation processes will depend on the new scores. However, this relief is limited to those who filed their petitions before June 3, 2025, the date the provisional answer key was published, ensuring only those who acted promptly to challenge the irregularities benefit from the decision.

Earlier, the court had initially stayed the release of NEET-UG 2025 results for all candidates but later allowed results to be declared for all except those from affected centres or specific petitioners, reflecting the evolving nature of the legal proceedings. The latest order specifically addresses the plight of students whose exam experience was marred by external circumstances, setting a precedent for future exam disruptions.
