Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav Announces New Policy to Recognize Organ Donors

Bhopal, February 12, 2025 – In a landmark move to encourage organ donation, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Monday that individuals who donate their organs before death to save lives will be accorded state honours during their last rites. The initiative aims to inspire more people to contribute to organ donation, thereby giving a new lease of life to those in need.

As part of the announcement, the Chief Minister stated that the government will ensure the transportation of deceased donors’ bodies and organs through air ambulance services, provided the family consents. Additionally, a provision will be introduced to present posthumous awards to such donors on national festivals.

The announcement came following a milestone achievement at AIIMS Bhopal, where the institute successfully performed its first heart transplant on January 26. The heart, retrieved from a 61-year-old brain-dead patient at NSCB Medical College in Jabalpur, was transplanted into a 53-year-old recipient from Itarsi. The organ was airlifted from Jabalpur to Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj Airport and transported to AIIMS Bhopal via a ‘green corridor’ arranged by the state police, ensuring minimal transit time.

Chief Minister Yadav personally met the heart transplant recipient, Dinesh Malviya, and later held discussions with AIIMS Bhopal Director Ajay Singh to review the healthcare facilities provided at the premier institute.

During his media interaction, Yadav elaborated on the government’s upcoming policy framework aimed at promoting organ donation. “A state-level institution will be established to drive awareness and encourage people to donate their bodies and organs. We will honour these donors during their last rites and introduce a system to award them posthumously for their noble contribution,” he stated.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the efficiency of the state’s air ambulance service, which was introduced last year. He emphasized that the initiative has significantly improved the transfer of critical patients across cities in record time. Furthermore, in regions lacking airstrips, helicopter services are being employed to airlift patients requiring urgent medical care.

This policy is expected to create a significant impact in addressing the organ donation gap in Madhya Pradesh, providing renewed hope for patients awaiting transplants.
