Hyderabad, May 31, 2025 — As the monsoon rains sweep across Hyderabad, local health officials are warning residents of a “perfect storm” of health threats. The city is witnessing a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases alongside a spike in seasonal ailments such as influenza, swine flu, dengue, chikungunya, and water-borne diseases like typhoid and jaundice.

According to Dr. B Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health (DPH), Telangana, the transition from the hot summer to the cooler monsoon season places additional stress on the human immune system, making people more susceptible to infections. “Fluctuating temperatures can put strain on the body’s immunity, and this is when infections like COVID-19 are more likely to emerge,” Dr. Nayak explained.

Hospitals See Rising Patient Numbers

Over the past 24 hours, clinics, private nursing homes, and government hospitals—including Fever Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, and Osmania General Hospital—have reported a noticeable increase in patients with viral fevers, flu, and common cold symptoms. The surge is putting pressure on healthcare infrastructure and diagnostic facilities, raising concerns about the city’s preparedness if cases continue to rise.

Dengue and Chikungunya Risks Remain High

The monsoon season creates ideal breeding conditions for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary vector for dengue and chikungunya. Despite some speculation that last year’s surge in cases might reduce this year’s risk, public health officials caution that outbreaks can occur in consecutive years. Residents are urged to eliminate stagnant water around their homes and use mosquito nets and repellents.

COVID-19: New Symptoms Emerge

This year’s wave of COVID-19 infections is presenting with unusual symptoms, including laryngitis and skin rashes such as urticaria (hives). Dr. Nayak noted that patients are experiencing prolonged fever, fatigue, sore throat, and changes in voice. Recovery times are also longer than with typical flu-like illnesses, and officials recommend wearing masks in crowded or closed spaces.

Health Advisory: Steps to Stay Safe

The Telangana DPH has issued the following precautions for residents:

Dengue and Chikungunya:

  • Use mosquito nets/screens on doors and windows.

  • Cover beds and cribs with mosquito nets.

  • Apply mosquito repellents.

  • Prevent water stagnation in and around homes.

  • Cover septic tanks with mesh.

  • Observe a weekly “Dry Day” to eliminate breeding sites.

Gastroenteritis, Jaundice, and Typhoid:

  • Drink only filtered or boiled water.

  • Wash hands regularly, especially before meals.

  • Avoid eating stale or outside food.

Viral Fevers and Influenza:

  • Avoid handshakes, especially with sick individuals.

  • Use hand sanitizers frequently.

  • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

  • Seek medical attention at government facilities if experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and early medical intervention to prevent complications and reduce the burden on the healthcare system during this challenging season.
