Aizawl, February 23, 2025 – Mizoram is set to witness a major transformation in its healthcare sector with the launch of a new health insurance scheme that will provide beneficiaries with coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year. Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the initiative on Friday, highlighting its potential to enhance healthcare accessibility for the state’s residents.

Initially, the scheme was designed to be backed by a Rs 1,000 crore loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). However, in a significant policy shift, the state government has decided to implement the scheme through internal funding, eliminating the need for external borrowing. This move is expected to provide financial stability while ensuring comprehensive medical coverage for eligible individuals.

The government has been in discussions with key stakeholders, including pensioners, government employees, and private hospitals, to fine-tune the framework of the scheme. Officials remain optimistic about reaching agreements that will facilitate a smooth rollout and effective implementation.

This new initiative will operate alongside the existing Mizoram State Health Care Scheme (MSHCS) and the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). By integrating these programs, the state aims to create a more robust healthcare system that benefits a wider population.

The government’s decision to self-finance the project marks a notable deviation from past approaches, demonstrating a commitment to fiscal responsibility while prioritizing public health. Further details on the eligibility criteria, enrollment process, and specific benefits of the scheme are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
