AIZAWL, Mizoram – Starting April 1st, the northeastern state of Mizoram will implement a landmark healthcare initiative, the Mizoram Universal Healthcare Scheme (MUHCS), promising comprehensive medical coverage to all its residents. The scheme, announced by Health Minister Lalrinpuii, aims to provide an annual health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family, regardless of economic status, including government employees.

The MUHCS is designed to operate in conjunction with the central government’s Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, ensuring that beneficiaries receive extensive coverage for pre-existing conditions and hospitalization expenses. This alignment will allow for seamless access to cashless treatment at both government-run hospitals and a network of empanelled private and church-run healthcare facilities.

“Our goal is to ensure that every family in Mizoram has access to quality healthcare without the fear of financial burden,” stated Health Minister Lalrinpuii. “This scheme is a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage.”

While hospitals in southern Mizoram have reportedly shown strong readiness for the scheme’s launch, negotiations are still underway with private hospitals in the state capital, Aizawl, to finalize their participation.

Registration for the MUHCS has already begun offline in March, with online registration slated to commence in April. Families interested in enrolling can choose from three distinct plan options, each offering varying levels of coverage based on annual premium contributions. These premiums range from Rs 2,500 to Rs 10,000, allowing families to select a plan that best suits their needs and financial capabilities.

The Mizoram government hopes that the MUHCS will significantly improve healthcare accessibility and affordability for its citizens, marking a major milestone in the state’s public health sector.
