Aizawl/Kohima, June 19, 2025 — Mizoram and Nagaland have emerged as the states with the highest adult HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in India, according to the latest data released by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). The findings highlight a significant public health challenge in the northeastern region, with rates far exceeding the national average.

Prevalence Rates and National Comparison

According to NACO, the adult (15–49 years) HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Mizoram stands at 2.73%, while Nagaland follows at 1.37%. These figures are dramatically higher than the national prevalence rate of 0.20%. The rates in these two states are also much higher than those recorded in the other 35 states and Union Territories.

Other northeastern states—Manipur (0.87%), Meghalaya (0.43%), Tripura (0.37%), and Arunachal Pradesh (0.25%)—also report prevalence rates above the national average. In contrast, Assam (0.13%) and Sikkim (0.11%) have rates below the national average.

Recent Developments in Mizoram

Mizoram, in particular, is facing an acute HIV crisis. As of January 2025, the state has reported 32,287 individuals testing positive for HIV, with 5,511 deaths attributed to the disease. Between April 2024 and January 2025, 1,769 new cases were detected. Health officials have attributed the majority of new infections to unprotected sexual activity (67%) and the use of unsterilized syringes (30.44%).

Despite the severity of the situation, there are some positive signs. The state has observed a decrease in new infections and HIV-related deaths, which officials attribute to increased testing and improved access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). State Health Minister Lalrinpuii has called for stronger action from legislators and stressed the importance of regular blood testing and adherence to ART medication.

Government Response

In response to the crisis, Mizoram’s legislators have pledged to allocate Rs 50,000 each from their MLA funds for 2024–25 to support the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) in providing uninterrupted ART treatment to those affected.

Conclusion

The high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Mizoram and Nagaland underscores the urgent need for intensified public health interventions, community education, and support for affected individuals. The situation remains a significant concern for health authorities and policymakers across the region.
