Doctors at Cloudnine Hospital in Chennai have accomplished a medical marvel by providing a new lease of life to twin sisters, termed “miracle babies,” who were born prematurely at just 24 weeks gestation.
The twin babies, weighing a mere 620 grams (twin 1) and 720 grams (twin 2), underwent surgeries to manage hernia and a congenital heart defect. They spent two months on ventilator support, facing numerous challenges in their journey to survival.
Dr. Dhilip Kumar S, Senior Consultant Neonatologist, and Paediatrician at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Chennai, OMR branch, described the twins’ ordeal as extraordinary. “Both the twins were born micro-preemies at 24 weeks and are indeed miracle babies as they had to undergo two major life-threatening surgeries for treating hernia and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart defect. Their survival was doubtful in the early days of birth,” Dr. Dhilip stated.
The twins’ mother, aged 36, faced numerous complications during her pregnancy, including an incompetent cervix, chronic hypertension, fever, and amniotic fluid leakage. Despite undergoing cervical cerclage during the 15th week of pregnancy, the premature opening of her cervix at 24 weeks posed a significant risk to her twin babies.
After birth, the babies faced a myriad of challenges, including breathing difficulties and a drop in weight. Neither twin opened their eyes for the first two weeks, and their length measured just over 13 inches.
Twin 1 was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic lung disease, necessitating prolonged oxygen dependence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Additionally, she underwent surgery for an inguinal hernia due to immature abdominal wall muscles.
Twin 2 faced complications with a low heart rate and skin bleeding, along with a large patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Despite medical treatment, open-heart surgery was required to address the congenital heart defect.
After an arduous journey of 105 days in the hospital, the twins were discharged, weighing 2.2 kg (Twin 1) and 2.3 kg (Twin 2), respectively.
