The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has underscored the importance of a balanced diet in fortifying the immune system against infections such as tuberculosis (TB). In a recent statement, the Ministry highlighted the pivotal role of nutrition in enhancing overall health and resilience to diseases like TB.

Through a post on social media platform X, the Ministry urged individuals to prioritize nutritious food choices as part of efforts to bolster their health and contribute to the nationwide goal of a #TBMuktBharat, or a TB-free India.

“A balanced diet plays a crucial role in boosting our immune system, making us more resilient to infections like TB,” the Ministry emphasized in its post.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), India has committed to eliminating TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target set for 2030. Despite substantial efforts, India continues to grapple with a significant burden of TB cases, accounting for 27 percent of the global burden with a staggering 2.8 million cases.

Last month, President Droupadi Murmu reiterated the importance of collective action in achieving the goal of a TB-free India, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts across sectors.

In February, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya provided insights into the government’s initiatives to combat TB, highlighting an annual expenditure of approximately Rs 3,000 crore on free medicines, testing, and nutrition for 25 lakh TB patients across the country. Minister Mandaviya also disclosed that 10 lakh TB patients in India were being supported by compassionate citizens who not only adopted them but also provided monthly nutritional support.

The Ministry’s recent emphasis on the role of nutrition in TB prevention aligns with broader efforts to address public health challenges comprehensively. By promoting awareness about the significance of a balanced diet, authorities aim to empower individuals in safeguarding their health and contributing to the collective aspiration of a TB-free India.

As the nation continues its battle against TB, initiatives like these underscore the importance of holistic approaches that encompass not only medical interventions but also nutritional support and community engagement in achieving health objectives.
