Grammy-winning singer Michael Bolton, 72, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in late 2023 after his family noticed unusual behavior during a casual bowling outing, his daughters exclusively shared with PEOPLE. The incident, initially dismissed as stress, became a critical clue in identifying his glioblastoma diagnosis.

The “When a Man Loves a Woman” singer’s health journey began with a series of subtle red flags. During a family bowling night post-Thanksgiving 2023, Bolton repeatedly bowled out of turn-a stark departure from his usual demeanor. “That was super weird for him,” daughter Taryn Bolton, 45, recalled. Earlier that evening, Bolton unexpectedly fell from his chair, a moment the family found alarming given his active lifestyle and sobriety. Combined with severe headaches and balance issues during a November performance on Richard Branson’s Necker Island, the pattern prompted a hospital visit.

An MRI revealed a brain tumor, which was surgically removed. Subsequent testing confirmed glioblastoma, a rare and fast-growing cancer affecting roughly 15,000 Americans annually, according to the National Brain Tumor Society.

Treatment and Recovery
Bolton underwent radiation and chemotherapy, completing treatment in October 2024. His neuro-oncologist, Dr. Ingo Mellinghoff of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, emphasized the importance of monitoring recurring symptoms like personality shifts, speech changes, or sudden weakness. “If all of a sudden you’re a completely different person… that’s never normal,” he noted.

Despite glioblastoma’s high recurrence rate, Bolton’s April 2025 MRI showed no signs of the tumor’s return. His daughters credit early detection and his commitment to regular scans every two months.

A Family’s Reflection
“We missed so many things,” Taryn admitted, reflecting on how exhaustion and stress initially masked the severity of her father’s condition. “But looking back, everything pointed to this.”

Bolton, who maintained a busy schedule with concerts, a Masked Singer appearance, and a film cameo in 2023, continues to focus on his health and family.
