MEXICO CITY – Mexican health authorities have confirmed 22 cases of measles, raising concerns following a significant outbreak in the United States. The surge comes as the US grapples with over 200 infections and two deaths attributed to the highly contagious disease.

According to a report released Thursday, out of 416 suspected measles cases reported in Mexico this year, 22 have been confirmed as of March 9th. Notably, 18 of these cases are concentrated in the northern state of Chihuahua, which shares a border with Texas.

“There are two imported cases, and 20 associated with importation,” the health report stated, indicating a clear link to the ongoing outbreak in the US.

The US outbreak, particularly affecting West Texas and neighboring New Mexico, has seen over 130 cases reported this year, predominantly among unvaccinated children. This situation has heightened concerns in Mexico, where a significant portion of the confirmed cases are also among young children.

In Mexico, the health authorities report that more than half of the confirmed cases are children under nine years old. The oldest patient is 19. This demonstrates the vulnerability of children to the disease.

The increase marks a significant rise from the seven imported measles cases recorded in Mexico throughout the entirety of last year.

Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, spreads through respiratory droplets and can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected individual leaves an area. Symptoms typically include fever, respiratory issues, and a characteristic rash. However, the disease can lead to severe complications, such as pneumonia, encephalitis (brain inflammation), and even death.

Health officials urge vigilance and vaccination to prevent further spread of the disease.
