MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s Health Ministry announced on Friday the country’s first confirmed human case of myiasis caused by screwworm. The infection occurred in a 77-year-old woman residing in Acacoyagua, located in the southern state of Chiapas.

According to health officials, the patient is currently in stable condition and is undergoing antibiotic treatment.

Myiasis is a parasitic disease that occurs when fly larvae (maggots) infest open wounds on a host, in this case, a human. The screwworm larvae are particularly dangerous as they feed on living tissue, which can lead to severe tissue damage if not treated promptly.

The confirmation of this case has prompted health experts to emphasize the importance of vigilance and proper wound care to prevent further infections. The Health Ministry is monitoring the situation.
