The Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Department has issued an important public health advisory regarding Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) following recent media reports and concerns in the region. GBS is a rare but serious neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves. It often follows infections such as respiratory illness, gastroenteritis, dengue, or the Zika virus.
Common symptoms to watch for include weakness, tingling, or numbness starting in the legs, difficulty walking or climbing stairs, loss of balance or coordination, and in severe cases, trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking. The department strongly advises early medical consultation if any of these symptoms appear and cautions against self-medication or delaying hospital visits.
To prevent health risks, the advisory recommends maintaining good hygiene, avoiding contaminated or raw food, protecting against mosquito bites in dengue or Zika-prone areas, and boosting immunity through a nutritious diet.
This advisory, issued by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) Meghalaya, highlights the importance of awareness and early action to contain and mitigate potential outbreaks.
