Shillong, May 6, 2025 – In a significant move to bolster healthcare infrastructure in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has officially launched the Meghalaya Health Advancement Policy. This new initiative aims to provide substantial financial support to non-profit hospitals across the state, with each selected institution set to receive grants totaling Rs 2 crore.
The policy was inaugurated on Monday with a ceremonial distribution of the first instalment-Rs 1 crore each-to Tura Christian Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital, Tura. Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved regions.
“We will be supporting five not-for-profit hospitals across the state under this policy by providing financial aid to upgrade their infrastructure,” Sangma announced.
The funds are earmarked for a range of improvements, including the enhancement of critical infrastructure, construction of additional rooms, and procurement of essential medical equipment. The Chief Minister highlighted that the support goes beyond financial aid, describing it as a “gesture of appreciation and a step toward sustainable healthcare.”
The second instalment of the grant will be released by the Health Department once hospitals submit a utilization certificate for the first tranche, ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.
The policy also recognizes the invaluable role played by hospitals run by missionaries and charitable organizations. Sangma expressed heartfelt gratitude to healthcare workers, administrators, and support staff, acknowledging their tireless service and dedication to community health.
“Often, the tireless service of our healthcare workers, sisters, doctors, and hospital administrators goes unnoticed. Today, I want to personally thank each one of you for the difference you are making in our people’s lives,” he said.
In addition to the two hospitals in Tura, grants will also be provided to hospitals in Jowai and Shillong, further extending the policy’s reach.
The Meghalaya Health Advancement Policy underscores the government’s resolve to support institutions that have historically contributed to community service and health outreach, especially in regions with limited access to quality healthcare.
