Burdwan, West Bengal: A scandal has erupted at Burdwan Medical College (BMC) following allegations that a group of students demanded the right to cheat in their upcoming final-year MBBS exams. A senior staff member overseeing academic affairs raised concerns about an attempt to compromise exam integrity, sparking widespread controversy.

According to reports, a faculty member at BMC disclosed to a senior medical education official at Swasthya Bhawan that students had explicitly requested permission to use unfair means during their examinations. The MBBS final-year exams, conducted by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, are scheduled to take place on March 3 across all medical colleges in the state.

Alleged Intimidation and Unrest

A report by the Times of India suggests that a junior doctor previously involved in the RG Kar Medical College protest allegedly pressured BMC staff to permit certain students to carry cell phones into the exam hall. When faculty members refused to comply, the junior doctor reportedly resorted to intimidation, even threatening them with transfers.

Efforts by faculty to counsel students and persuade them to focus on their studies were allegedly dismissed. Reports indicate that the students insisted their demand to cheat was non-negotiable, escalating tensions on campus.

Protest and Campus Siege

Matters took a turn for the worse when a group of students staged a protest on campus, laying siege to the principal’s office late into the night on Tuesday, February 4. Their demands extended beyond exam-related leniency, as they also sought the reinstatement of seven students who had been expelled from the hostel following the RG Kar protests. The agitation was primarily led by final-year MBBS students, reportedly supported by paramedical students, further intensifying the unrest.

The incident has shocked the academic community, raising concerns about the state of medical education and ethical standards in the profession. Authorities have yet to issue a formal statement addressing the allegations.
