An influential U.S. medical journal, the Annals of Internal Medicine, has firmly rejected a request from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to retract a significant Danish study on the safety of aluminum-based vaccine ingredients. The journal’s editor-in-chief, Dr. Christine Laine, confirmed the decision, stating that the study was subjected to rigorous peer review and found no evidence of scientific misconduct or serious errors that would warrant a retraction.
The Danish study, which analyzed the health data of over 1.2 million children over a span of two decades, concluded that there is no increased risk of neurodevelopmental, autoimmune, or allergic disorders associated with the cumulative aluminum exposure from childhood vaccinations. The findings were hailed by experts as robust evidence supporting the safety of vaccines.
Secretary Kennedy, a vocal critic of vaccine safety, had publicly described the study as a “deceitful propaganda stunt by the pharmaceutical industry” and called for its immediate withdrawal from publication. However, the journal’s leadership, in accordance with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, maintained that retraction is only warranted when study findings are invalidated by serious errors or when there is documented scientific misconduct.
In a statement, the lead author of the study, Anders Peter Hviid, defended his team’s work and denied any deceit, noting that the study’s design was based on a previous analysis that had shown a possible link, which Kennedy had cited in his own critique. The journal has stated it will respond to the criticism the article has received but does not intend to engage directly with Kennedy’s opinion piece.
