Standing Committee Approves Key Citywide Initiatives
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee has taken significant steps to enhance the city’s public health and infrastructure. In its recent meeting, the committee cleared several proposals set to transform essential services, environmental management, and disease prevention across Delhi.
Upgrades in Road Maintenance and Urban Sustainability
One of the flagship measures is the adoption of the ‘One Road-One Day’ scheme. Inspired by the Swachh Bharat Mission, this initiative commits to upgrading one major road in each MCD zone every day, aiming to systematically address road conditions and ease urban mobility.
Additionally, the committee has approved the establishment of a dung processing plant at the Ghazipur abattoir. This move is geared toward sustainable waste management and environmental protection, with potential benefits in cleanliness and resource recycling.
Health and Safety Reforms
To safeguard public sensibilities and health, the MCD will now prohibit meat shops from operating within 100 meters of schools and religious places. This policy intends to respect community sensitivities and ensure a healthier environment for children.
Management of stray dogs emerged as another focal area. Councillors emphasized the need for a structured policy for stray dog control, which is currently under development to foster community safety and animal welfare.
Focus on Water Quality and Disease Control
The committee highlighted preventing waterborne diseases as a top priority. From January to June, a notable number of dengue, chikungunya, and malaria cases were recorded. Appropriately, MCD hospitals such as Hindu Rao Hospital have designated units for managing these cases. The MCD has also enhanced water quality checks, ensuring that unsafe water samples are promptly reported to the Delhi Jal Board for corrective action.
Looking Ahead
Structured parking solutions and other urban management measures were also discussed, reflecting a broad vision for well-rounded civic development. Environmental sustainability, especially concerning water quality and public health, remains at the heart of the MCD’s agenda for Delhi.
