Chennai: Pursuing an MBBS degree in Tamil Nadu is now more expensive than ever, with private self-financing medical colleges in the state charging up to Rs 1.8 crore for the full undergraduate course. The steep increase comes after the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Tamil Nadu, released a revised fee structure for the academic year 2024-2025.

For management quota seats, the annual MBBS tuition fee has been set at Rs 15 lakh, resulting in a total of Rs 75 lakh over the typical 5-year duration of the course. Fees for the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota are significantly higher, fixed at Rs 27 lakh per year and amounting to Rs 1.4 crore for the full program. In addition to these tuition costs, private colleges are also imposing substantial non-tuition fees—covering hostel, mess, transportation, and other miscellaneous charges—which can push the overall expense in some institutions to between Rs 1 crore and Rs 1.8 crore.

Some examples of non-tuition charges include:

  • Salem-based Annapoorana Medical College and Hospital levies nearly Rs 6 lakh per year as non-tuition fees—a total of Rs 32 lakh for the course.

  • Chennai-based Panimalar Medical College Hospital and Research Institute and Madurai’s Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute also have similarly high non-tuition charges.

  • Hostel and mess fees across colleges typically range from Rs 60,000 to Rs 3 lakh per year, depending on the institution and accommodation type.

With these revisions, Tamil Nadu ranks among the states with the highest private medical education costs in India. The fee hike has sparked concern and debate regarding affordability and access to medical education for aspiring doctors from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
