Sydney, April 29, 2025 – Australian tennis star and two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell has accepted an 18-month suspension from professional tennis after breaching anti-doping regulations, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced today.

Infusion Above Allowed Limit

The 27-year-old admitted to violating anti-doping rules after he unknowingly received intravenous (IV) vitamin infusions that exceeded the permitted volume. According to the ITIA, Purcell was administered over 500 millilitres of vitamins on two separate occasions in late 2023, surpassing the maximum allowed 100 millilitres within a 12-hour period.

Purcell stated that he had informed the clinic of his status as a professional athlete and the need to adhere to the 100ml limit. However, the error still occurred, leading to the breach.

Cooperation and Reduced Sanction

The ITIA emphasized that Purcell’s case did not involve a positive test for a banned substance, but rather the use of a prohibited method. His full cooperation and transparency during the investigation resulted in a 25 percent reduction in his sanction.

“This case does not involve a player testing positive for a prohibited substance but demonstrates that the anti-doping rules are broader than that,” said ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse. “It also shows the ITIA considers intelligence from a range of sources with the overriding aim to protect everyone covered by the tennis anti-doping rules, and ensure a level playing field for all.”

Emotional Toll and Statement

Purcell, who won the Wimbledon men’s doubles title in 2022 and the US Open doubles title in 2024, described the ordeal as deeply distressing. In a statement posted to Instagram, he wrote, “The stress of the ongoing case has seriously affected my quality of life over the past few months. From being unable to sleep and eat properly, and refusing to be by myself, to developing nervous and anxious tics which I still currently battle day to day.”

“I’m so glad this is finally over for me and I can move on with my life,” he added.

Suspension Details

Purcell’s suspension, which began with a provisional ban in December 2023, will conclude on June 11, 2026. He will also forfeit results and prize money earned between December 16, 2023, and February 3, 2024, the period from his first violation to his first subsequent negative doping control sample. During his suspension, Purcell is barred from playing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis events sanctioned by ITIA member organizations.

Recent Doping Cases in Tennis

Purcell’s case follows other recent high-profile doping incidents in tennis. Last year, four-time French Open winner Iga Swiatek accepted a one-month suspension after a positive test linked to contaminated sleep medication. World number one Jannik Sinner was cleared of wrongdoing after two failed tests for a banned substance but agreed to a three-month ban earlier this year in a deal with the World Anti-Doping Agency.
