Kodaikanal, May 6, 2025 – A large-scale free anti-rabies vaccination campaign titled ‘RABIES FREE KODAI HILLS’ was launched on May 5, aiming to cover over 5,000 dogs across the scenic hill region of Kodaikanal. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Kodaikanal Society for Protection and Care for Animals (KSPCA) and Mission Rabies India.

The campaign was inaugurated by J Radhakrishnan, Additional Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary for the Civil Supplies Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, who personally administered the first dose of the vaccine. This marks a significant step toward maintaining Kodaikanal’s status as a rabies-controlled zone, with no human rabies cases reported in the area since 2016.

One of the campaign’s standout features is the use of a dedicated mobile tracking app developed by the World Veterinary Service (WVS). This technology ensures accountability and effective monitoring of all vaccinated animals, enhancing the campaign’s efficiency and transparency.

Mr. Radhakrishnan lauded the efforts of KSPCA and Mission Rabies, emphasizing the importance of replicating this model in other regions, including the Greater Chennai Corporation, to curb the spread of rabies on a larger scale.

The campaign will continue until May 10, with vaccination teams actively working across the hill region to protect both animals and humans from this deadly disease.
