A recent case reported by a team of cardiologists highlights potential health risks associated with the carnivore diet, a controversial eating regimen that emphasizes the consumption of animal fats while avoiding most other food groups. The patient, a man in his 40s, presented with yellowish nodules on his hands, feet, and elbows after following this diet for eight months.

Dr. Konstantinos Marmagkiolis and Dr. Jaime Caballero of Tampa General Hospital, along with Dr. Cezar Iliescu from the University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Center, detailed the case in a paper published in JAMA Cardiology. The patient sought medical assistance after noticing the nodules, which had appeared three weeks before his visit.

Upon examination, blood tests revealed the patient’s cholesterol levels were approximately four times higher than normal. His diet included excessive amounts of animal fats—nearly 10 pounds of butter, cheese, and other fatty foods daily—alongside additional fat added to his meals, such as hamburgers.

The doctors diagnosed the patient with xanthelasma, a condition where cholesterol deposits form under the skin, often leading to unsightly and sometimes painful nodules. In this case, the condition had advanced to the extent that some deposits were breaking through the skin on his palms, soles, and elbows.

The medical team advised the patient to reduce his fat intake significantly. However, they cautioned that dietary changes alone would not resolve the nodules. Treatment options for removal include surgical excision or cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen. Additionally, they warned the patient of serious health risks associated with persistently elevated cholesterol levels, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, and liver complications.

This case underscores the dangers of extreme dietary choices and the need for balanced nutrition. Medical professionals recommend consulting a healthcare provider before adopting drastic diets.
