Tamil Nadu’s innovative public health initiative, the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam Scheme, has made significant strides in improving the management of hypertension and diabetes across the state. Launched by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, this flagship program aims to deliver comprehensive home-based healthcare services, particularly targeting non-communicable diseases, directly to the doorsteps of residents in seven key districts including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Salem.

The scheme covers over 1,172 health sub-centers, 189 primary health centers, and 50 community health centers, ensuring a broad network of healthcare delivery points. It focuses on patients aged 45 and above, providing regular monitoring, medication, and health education through a dedicated team of nurses, physiotherapists, public health experts, and volunteers. This approach not only facilitates better disease control but also reduces the need for patients to travel to hospitals, thereby minimizing the risk of infectious disease spread.

With a budget allocation of Rs. 258 crore, the program is designed to benefit over 30 lakh households, reaching at least one crore individuals. It includes screening for non-communicable diseases and offers door-to-door delivery of medicines and health services. The scheme has also integrated tuberculosis (TB) screening for 80 lakh diabetics, recognizing the increased vulnerability of diabetic patients to TB infection. This comprehensive strategy is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader efforts to improve treatment success rates and community support for TB patients.

The success of Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam lies in its community-centric model, which brings healthcare closer to the people, particularly those with chronic illnesses who face challenges accessing traditional health facilities. By empowering patients with timely care and continuous monitoring, the scheme has contributed to better control of hypertension and diabetes, which are major public health concerns in the state.
