A 16-year-old aspiring medical student from Maharashtra’s Sangli district, Sadhna Bhonsle, was tragically beaten to death by her father following a dispute over her performance in a National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) mock test.

Incident Details

The incident occurred on the night of June 22 in Nelkaranji village, Atpadi tehsil. Sadhna, a Class 12 student who had previously scored 92% in her Class 10 board exams, was preparing for the NEET UG 2026, a highly competitive examination for medical college admissions in India. According to police reports, her father, Dhondiram Bhonsle—a school teacher and principal—became enraged after learning about her low marks in a mock test. In a fit of anger, he attacked Sadhna with the wooden handle of a stone grinder in the presence of her mother and brother, inflicting serious head injuries.

Sadhna was rushed to a hospital in Sangli, but succumbed to her injuries during treatment. The post-mortem report confirmed that she died of multiple injuries.

Police Action and Investigation

Following the incident, Sadhna’s mother lodged a complaint with the police. Dhondiram Bhonsle was arrested and remains in police custody as the investigation continues. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Juvenile Justice Act.

Background

Sadhna had been studying at a residential school and had recently returned home. The NEET UG exam, for which she was preparing, is one of India’s most challenging entrance tests, with around 2.5 million candidates competing for just over 1,18,000 MBBS seats across 780 medical colleges.

Community Reaction

The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow in the local community, highlighting the immense pressure faced by students preparing for competitive exams in India. Authorities have urged parents and educators to support students’ mental well-being and avoid undue pressure over academic performance.
