PUNE: The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has initiated a formal inquiry into Dr. Ghaisas following serious allegations of medical negligence potentially linked to the death of a female patient. The council is proceeding with the investigation despite the doctor’s absence from a scheduled hearing.

The MMC issued a show-cause notice to Dr. Ghaisas on April 9th concerning the allegations. However, when summoned for a hearing on Monday, Dr. Ghaisas did not appear, citing an ongoing police case filed against him by the Alankar police in connection with the same incident.

Prior to the MMC’s hearing, Dr. Ghaisas had already been booked for negligence by the police. This action was based on the findings of an expert panel report submitted by Sassoon General Hospital, which examined the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death.

Dr. Vinky Rughwani, the administrator for the MMC, confirmed that the council has begun its probe. While the council has obtained treatment documents from the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMH), further information is required for a comprehensive review. Dr. Rughwani stated that the MMC is actively seeking additional medical records pertaining to the patient’s treatment from Surya Hospital, Indira IVF, and Manipal Hospital.

The outcome of the MMC inquiry could have significant professional repercussions for Dr. Ghaisas. If the investigation finds evidence of professional misconduct leading to the patient’s death, the council has the authority to impose penalties ranging from suspension of his medical license to its permanent revocation.

The investigation remains active as the MMC gathers the necessary records to complete its assessment.
