Pune — Beginning this June, the Maharashtra government has rolled out a special statewide immunisation campaign targeting measles and rubella (MR) as part of India’s ambitious goal to eliminate these life-threatening diseases by 2026.
Health officials, led by Dr. Sandeep Sangale, joint director of health services, family welfare bureau, are focusing on identifying high-risk areas and vulnerable populations, particularly where routine immunisation coverage falls below 95%. The campaign will involve monthly rapid head count surveys to detect children who have missed their MR1 or MR2 vaccine doses. These children will be vaccinated in a campaign mode to ensure no one is left behind.
“Measles and rubella are dangerous viral infections that can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, and brain inflammation in children, and untreated cases can be fatal,” officials explained. “Rubella infection in pregnant women can result in miscarriages or babies born with severe congenital defects like deafness, heart disorders, or intellectual disabilities.”
The campaign follows a structured monthly schedule: high-risk areas are identified on the third Wednesday, followed by a rapid head count survey on the subsequent Thursday and Friday. Survey verification is conducted on the fourth Monday, and a due list for MR vaccinations is prepared by the fourth Thursday, which also includes an additional vaccination session to meet increased demand. All immunisation reports are submitted by the fourth Friday of each month to track progress and enhance community health outcomes.
Approximately 19 lakh children across Maharashtra are expected to be covered under this special drive, marking a significant step toward disease elimination and improved public health.
