Bhopal, June 7, 2025 — In a significant push towards public health reform, Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel has urged for collective and coordinated efforts to eradicate sickle cell anaemia from India by 2047. Speaking at a Sickle Cell Sensitisation Programme held at Gandhi Medical College, Governor Patel emphasized the vital role of public awareness and participation in combating the disease.
Addressing an audience of doctors, medical students, and families affected by sickle cell anaemia, the Governor highlighted the need for every individual to educate themselves about the symptoms, treatment options, and preventive strategies for the disease. “Awareness is the most powerful tool in our arsenal. Coordinated efforts are essential to eradicate the disease through diverse treatment methods,” he stated.
Governor Patel also stressed the importance of focused research and scientific validation, particularly regarding the medicinal herbs available in India’s forests. He called for rigorous studies to confirm their effectiveness in treating sickle cell anaemia.
Preventive Measures for Future Generations
A key part of the Governor’s address was the emphasis on preventive measures to protect future generations. He advocated for prospective brides and grooms to match their sickle cell genetic cards before marriage, recommended necessary tests during pregnancy, and urged that newborns be screened for sickle cell anaemia within 72 hours of birth.
During the event, Governor Patel interacted warmly with children suffering from the disease and their families, encouraging them to maintain a healthy lifestyle through nutritious food and regular exercise.
Government Initiatives and Future Plans
Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, who also serves as the State’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, outlined the state’s ongoing efforts under the Sickle Cell Eradication Mission-2047. Launched in Shahdol by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023, the mission aims to intensify testing and awareness campaigns. Minister Shukla announced plans to establish Centres of Excellence for Prenatal Testing in all medical colleges across Madhya Pradesh.
The event concluded with renewed commitments from both the government and the medical community to work together toward a sickle cell-free India.
