BHOPAL – The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly has voiced serious concerns regarding the rising prevalence of childhood heart attacks in Indore, attributing a significant portion of the problem to the excessive consumption of junk food. Lawmakers are now calling for the stringent implementation of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines to combat the growing health crisis.
During the concluding session of the Budget proceedings, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav addressed the assembly, acknowledging the existing healthcare shortcomings within the state. He outlined the government’s commitment to filling vacant doctor positions by October, a move aimed at bolstering the state’s medical infrastructure.
BJP MLA Riti Pathak brought to the assembly’s attention the acute shortage of medical staff, highlighting the stark disparities in healthcare accessibility across different districts. Her concerns underscored the urgent need for equitable healthcare distribution throughout Madhya Pradesh.
The session culminated in the passage of a substantial Rs 4,21,032 crore Budget. Notably, the budget was approved without the imposition of any new taxes, demonstrating the government’s focus on addressing existing issues, including the escalating health concerns related to junk food consumption.
The focus on junk food stems from increasing evidence linking processed and fast food to a range of health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, which are now alarmingly affecting younger populations. The assembly’s call for stricter enforcement of FSSAI guidelines aims to regulate the sale and consumption of such foods, particularly among children, in an effort to curb the incidence of heart-related ailments.
The assembly’s discussion reflects a growing awareness of the public health implications of dietary habits and the need for proactive measures to safeguard the health of the state’s youth.
