Bengaluru, August 1, 2025 — As Karnataka sees a steady increase in lung cancer diagnoses, doctors are sounding the alarm about the silent and often overlooked nature of the disease, emphasizing the life-saving potential of early detection.

A recent case at a leading Bengaluru hospital has brought the issue into stark focus. A 48-year-old man, who initially suffered from persistent back pain and difficulty walking, was given painkillers after being misdiagnosed. Only after his symptoms worsened did a neurologist urge further investigation, leading to an MRI and chest X-ray that revealed advanced lung cancer with spinal compression.

Doctors at Sakra World Hospital described the case as a grim reminder that lung cancer often progresses stealthily. “Lung cancer often doesn’t start with clear symptoms,” explained Dr. Sachin Kumar, Director of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at Sakra World Hospital. “Timely health screenings can make a major difference in early detection and survival.”

The Hidden Danger and Rising Numbers

To coincide with World Lung Cancer Day on August 1, doctors are leveraging public platforms to highlight the need for regular lung health checks, especially for smokers, individuals exposed to industrial fumes, or those living in heavily polluted areas.

While smoking remains the leading risk factor, experts note that non-smoker cases are growing, attributed to genetic factors and increasing environmental hazards. “Awareness about risk factors is crucial—the profile of the lung cancer patient is changing,” Dr. Kumar added.

Dr. Sunil Kumar K, lead consultant in interventional pulmonology at Aster CMI Hospital, identified late diagnosis as the greatest obstacle to effective treatment. “Symptoms such as mild cough, chest pain, or breathlessness are often mistaken for common ailments. Most patients reach us only after the cancer has reached advanced stages,” he said.

Advancements Bringing New Hope

Recent technological progress has made early detection more feasible. “Low-dose CT scans can detect tumours at an early stage. With timely diagnosis, patients may avoid chemotherapy and instead undergo surgery or targeted therapies,” said Dr. Sunil Kumar.

Official statistics reveal a concerning rise: Karnataka reports about 1% more cancer cases each year. Of the 88,000 new cases annually, nearly 6% are lung cancers. At Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology alone, over 21,000 new cancer cases have been registered this year, with lung cancer accounting for more than 6%.

Heeding the Warning Signs

Doctors warn that ignoring symptoms such as a chronic cough, blood in sputum, or unexplained weight loss can be perilous. They urge anyone experiencing these signs to seek immediate medical attention rather than dismiss them.

“Awareness and timely intervention can transform lung cancer from a silent killer to a treatable condition,” experts concluded.
