Paris – Liberia has reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, on a poultry farm in Bong county. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) announced the outbreak on Friday, noting the disease was detected in February.
According to information from Liberian authorities, the outbreak resulted in the deaths of 18 birds out of a flock of 26,000. The WOAH, based in Paris, indicated that 25,800 poultry in the affected flock in Western Africa were vaccinated. The report did not specify when the vaccination took place.
Bird flu has spread globally in recent years, leading to the culling of hundreds of millions of poultry.
