Two people have died and at least 58 others have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease in a growing outbreak centered in Central Harlem, New York City, since July 25, health officials confirmed. The cluster spans five zip codes—10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039—and surrounding neighborhoods.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria, which thrives in warm water environments like cooling towers, hot tubs, and building water systems. The disease is contracted by inhaling water vapor contaminated with the bacteria, but it is not spread from person to person. Symptoms generally include cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, and difficulty breathing and may resemble flu or other respiratory illnesses.

The New York City Department of Health has tested approximately 40 cooling towers in the affected zones and found 11 positive for Legionella. Remediation efforts were mandated and completed promptly, with the contaminated cooling towers fixed and brought back online to prevent further spread.

Health officials urge residents and workers in the impacted areas who exhibit flu-like symptoms to seek medical attention immediately, especially people aged 50 and older, smokers, and individuals with chronic lung disease or weakened immune systems, who face higher risk of severe illness or complications. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment can effectively cure the disease and reduce the risk of death.

Although two deaths have been confirmed, officials have not released further details about the victims. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities continue monitoring the situation to prevent additional cases.
