Renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. K.M. Cherian, a pioneer in the field of cardiology, passed away in Bengaluru on Saturday, January 25, at the age of 82. His demise occurred while he was attending a wedding, where he tragically collapsed.

Born on March 8, 1942, Dr. K.M. Cherian’s illustrious career spanned more than five decades, during which he revolutionized cardiac care in India. Among his many groundbreaking achievements were performing the country’s first coronary bypass surgery and pioneering India’s first heart-lung transplant. He also conducted the nation’s second cardiac transplant and established himself as a trailblazer in paediatric cardiac surgery.

Dr. Cherian was the founder of Frontier Lifeline Hospital in Chennai and Frontier Mediville, a medical science park dedicated to advancing indigenous cardiac valve technologies.

Just days before his passing, Dr. Cherian witnessed the virtual launch of his biography, “Just an Instrument,” at the Kerala Literary Fest. In his speech at the event, he reflected on his philosophy that every surgeon should treat their patient as a member of their own family.

Anecdotes of Compassion

Dr. Cherian’s career was marked by countless acts of compassion. He performed heart surgeries on 20 Iraqi children during a time of crisis and played a pivotal diplomatic role in securing the release of four Indian drivers imprisoned in Iraq. He was also known for his close association with Mother Teresa, who personally sought his help in treating a young boy in Kolkata at minimal cost.

A graduate of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Dr. Cherian furthered his medical training in Australia and New Zealand before returning to India. Despite lucrative offers abroad, he chose to serve his homeland, eventually becoming the honorary cardiac surgeon to the President of India and treating numerous international patients.
