Authorities in northwest China have uncovered a shocking case of mass lead poisoning at a kindergarten, with over 200 children affected after paint was deliberately added to their food. The incident occurred at Heshi Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, Gansu province, and has reignited concerns about persistent food safety issues in the country.

Investigations revealed that the kindergarten’s management purchased paint online and mixed it into meals, reportedly in a misguided attempt to attract more students. Out of 251 students tested, 233 were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood, and 201 required hospitalization for treatment.

The World Health Organization has repeatedly warned of the severe dangers posed by lead exposure, particularly to young children, whose developing central nervous systems are especially vulnerable. Symptoms of lead poisoning in children can include developmental delays, learning difficulties, and neurological damage.

Eight individuals, including the headmaster of the kindergarten, have been detained as the investigation continues. The case has drawn national attention and sparked widespread outrage, highlighting the urgent need for stricter food safety regulations and oversight in educational institutions across China.
